The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is one of six carriers in the Nimitz class of United
States aircraft carriers. The Eisenhower was commissioned in October 1977.
This class of aircraft carrier has a normal crew complement of between 3,100 to
3,200 men plus an additional 2,800 members of the air wing when aboard. The
ships also carry 72 U.S. Marines who provide security on the vessel.
The Nimitz class carrier decks have two launching areas for simultaneous
operations. One is referred to as the axial deck and the other is an angled deck.
Each deck has two steam catapults and is served by two elevators operating at
the deck edges. Each carrier has surface search, air detection, and threat
detection radars. Three 20 millimeter Phalanx Close-In Weapons System three-
barrel Gatling guns provide close-in protection for the Eisenhower. It also has
three eight-tube missile launchers for longer-range protection. Like all ships in
the Nimitz class, the Eisenhower depends on its escorts for air, surface, and
submarine protection.
The CVW-7 Naval Air Wing operates the approximate 85 aircraft onboard the
USS Eisenhower.
